Angels Manager Ron Washington Isn't Worried About Anthony Rendon's Slow Start

Anthony Rendon's struggles continued on Tuesday with another hitless night. He has yet to record his first hit of the season in 19 at-bats.

Despite the early disappointment, Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington has kept Rendon at the top of the lineup. He told reporters that he isn't worried about his third baseman's slow start.

“I’m not at all concerned about Anthony Rendon,” Washington said. “He’s proven who he is and what he can do. As long as he’s able to be out there on the field, it’s just a matter of time before he shows up doing the things that he’s capable of.”

The 33-year-old hasn't hit leadoff since 2015 and has spent the majority of his big league career in the middle of the order. However, with this lineup, Washington is using Rendon at the top spot because of his ability to see a lot of pitches and get on base.

While he is seeing a lot of pitches, Rendon isn't getting on base. His on-base percentage is .050 by virtue of a single walk.

Rendon told reporters on March 30 that he is embracing the challenge of batting leadoff but isn't sure how long Washington will keep him in the spot. He hasn't had a hit since July 3 of last season before he missed the rest of the season with a fractured left tibia.

“We’re only a few games in, so we’ll ride it out,” Rendon said. “This game is all about adjustments … If it works out, it works out. If not, then we can change it up again.”
